6. Gower Peninsula

10th July 2021

I really enjoyed this hike and completed the first half with hiking buddy Betty Biz. It started off very wet and windy but cleared up after an hour and the day ended with blazing sunshine. I found the terrain enjoyably challenging with lots of sharp and tricky descents and ascents in the first half which we thought were more akin to an Ultra challenge than a Mighty Hike.

Most of the tough hills were in the first half of the hike with the second half containing a fair bit walking on loose sand which is always fun. There is quite a long upward slog towards the end of the hike for about 1.5 miles and just as you think you need to climb more as the hill unfolds before you, you turn right and head down towards the finish.

Once again Macmillan have chosen a spectaular coastline for this hike with fantastic rugged coastal scenery for the first half, and rolling hills for the second.

A special treat at the end was watching Betty Biz and Steve Crees cross the line – Steve in his magnificent frog hat!

The Gower Peninsula is a great hike and one I will definitely do again – one of my favourites this year. The only change I would make is to avoid the horrendous drive from Portsmouth and fly into Cardiff instead.
